Scope of Position
The purpose of this position is to provide instruction necessary to assist ABE level learners in the attainment of their basic education and related goals.
Key Measurable Expectations (KMEs)
- Provide ABE instruction in the content areas of Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, digital literacy and workforce skills.
- Assess learner academic abilities through pre/post-testing and develop lesson plans based on learner needs.
- Assist with the development and achievement of program goals and objectives.
- Prepare learners to advance academically by increasing learner literacy level in order to obtain the Illinois High School Diploma or develop the workforce literacy skills necessary to obtain employment.
- Utilize a variety of instructional methods including technology and multimedia to accommodate diverse learning styles.
- Demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, and individual diversity and values.
- Develop systemic solutions to barriers to successful completion of ABE instruction by students at L&C. Barriers may include lack of transportation, inadequate day- care, and inadequate employment.
- Coordinate the recruitment, retention, orientation, training and placement of volunteer tutors and adult learners for the Adult Volunteer Literacy Program.
- Assist with the planning and implementation of an annual tutor recognition event.
- Develop and maintain a network of community sites, agencies and civic organizations throughout the college district to use for tutoring purposes.
- Assist with the development and distribution of recruitment/awareness materials.
- Collect and analyze data, by maintaining volunteer and adult learner records that will be basis for reporting purposes and to inform programmatic changes to improve the likelihood of success.
- Develop a system to monitor progress toward completion of individual adult learners’ goals.
- Assist with student orientation process to identify potential learners.
- Participate in staff development and professional development.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field required. Master’s Degree and or Reading Endorsement preferred.
- One to two years’ experience teaching in a grade/high school or equivalent setting.
- Demonstrated awareness of and sensitivity to cultural, ethnic, and individual diversity and values.
Team Members can expect to be paid an hourly rate of $20.17.
