Introduction:
This is a position that works in the STEM center in the Math and Sciences department under the general supervision of the Department Chair of Math and Sciences. The STEM Center offers a dedicated space that fosters interaction between students and faculty. It provides valuable resources such as peer mentoring and tutoring services and hosts STEM-related events, workshops, and activities designed to enhance learning, collaboration, and innovation in the sciences.
Duties and Responsibilities

Manage and oversee the STEM Peer Mentoring program and STEM Center at Kapi‘olani Community College.
-
Recruit and supervise peer mentors and student monitors in consultation with STEM faculty; oversee their hiring and SECE management.
-
Manage and budget all the expenditures related to the STEM center and student employment.
-
Focus on the engagement of all qualified students with an emphasis on Native Hawaiian students and under-represented minorities.
-
Manage and maintain a comprehensive database of past and active STEM students. Gather, compile and report annually on the utilization of STEM peer mentors and the Center.
-
Collaborate with other tutoring center coordinators at Kapi‘olani Community College with respect to STEM mentor training, certifications, and the implementation of best practices for STEM mentors.

Implement STEM events in the center inviting academic programs and/or community organizations to share opportunities with STEM students, and participate in existing campus recruitment and/or retention events organized by the College.

Establish and maintain excellent rapport and correspondence with students, faculty, academic programs, and University of Hawai‘i stakeholders.

Lead the creation and dissemination of STEM materials– such as degree pathways, career information–as well as internship and workforce opportunities for students in collaboration with academic counselors, faculty, and the Undergraduate Research Experiences Coordinator.

Advise STEM students in academic & career pathways in collaboration with academic counselors and faculty.
-
Maintain and oversee the STEM student research publication, marketing, STEM website, and social media.
-
Support the organization and implementation of the bi-annual Student Undergraduate Research Fair.

May work in the evening and/or weekend as directed by the supervisor.

Minimum Qualifications
-
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, Education, Social Sciences, Humanities or related field and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities related to managing and overseeing learning centers; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of managing and overseeing learning centers as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
-
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with managing and overseeing learning centers.
-
Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
-
Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.

Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.

Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software, and must possess strong computer skills with commonly used professional software programs such as Google Suite/Microsoft Office, Adobe, Zoom, and other communications, project management, or creative technologies.

Demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
Desirable Qualifications
-
Possession of a Master’s degree or higher in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, Sciences, Education, Social Sciences, Humanities or related field.

Knowledge of Native Hawaiian or indigenous cultures, language, history educational programs, issues, and resources.
-
At least one year of professional experience working with Native Hawaiian students at the post-secondary level or advocacy work within the Native Hawaiian community.
-
Understands open door institutional policies and has extensive experience working with diverse student populations that include at-risk, socio-economically disadvantaged, students with disabilities, under-represented, and/or non-traditional students.
-
Familiarity with Kapi’olani STEM Associate degree requirements.
-
At least one year of professional experience with marketing outreach with demonstrated ability to work with Canva or similar creative tools, video editing, web development, social media.
-
At least one year of professional experience in supervising peer mentors, including training, guiding, and evaluating peer mentors
-
Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state requirements (Title IX, FERPA) regarding equal educational opportunity and privacy rights.
-
At least one year of professional experience managing and overseeing learning centers in higher education.
-
Extensive knowledge and professional experience with tutoring best practices.
-
Professional experience in organizing events and workshops with a high level of efficiency, attention to detail, and the ability to handle multiple tasks under tight deadlines. Professional experience in managing both in-person, hybrid, and virtual events is a plus.

Possesses a valid driver's license with a clean driving record and demonstrated ability to operate vehicles safely and responsibly.
