Job Description

WHO WE ARE SEEKING:

Cuyamaca College is a small, community-centered college committed to equity, excellence, and social justice. We offer a rich environment for Earth Science education, including a nature preserve, NOAA weather station, aquariums and terrariums, and an on-campus Kumeyaay village. Cuyamaca College seeks a passionate and dedicated Earth Science Professor with an emphasis on Native & Environmental Science to lead our Earth Science Department. This tenure-track position will redesign and expand our Earth Science program by integrating Western and Native scientific perspectives. To enhance interdisciplinary learning and program development, this position will foster connections with Physics, Engineering, Biology, Computer Science, Ornamental Horticulture, and Kumeyaay Studies.

 

The successful candidate will develop and maintain a comprehensive earth science curriculum, design laboratory exercises, coordinate field study opportunities, engage in community outreach, and promote sustainability practices. Responsibilities include developing courses in alignment with Kumeyaay Studies, supporting the California Indian Education Act (AB 1703), and enhancing educational experiences through equity and inclusivity. The position involves collaboration with other departments, supporting historically marginalized groups, and contributing to the college's mission of increasing equitable access, eliminating equity gaps, and promoting environmental sustainability.

Necessary Qualifications:

• Academic Preparation for teaching and developing curriculum in Earth Science to include geography, geology, and oceanography for general education or transfer majors.

• Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate Earth Science concepts to students at all levels, including experience teaching in an active and collaborative learning environment.

• The ability to develop and maintain laboratory exercises and field study opportunities for hands-on learning in Earth Science, working in collaboration with colleagues or lab technician support.

• Experience or willingness to engage in public outreach and community education initiatives related to Earth Science, particularly with local indigenous communities.

• Ability to teach Earth Science courses that center Native American perspectives and Indigenous ecological knowledge, sustainability practices, and environmental awareness.

• Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, language, ability or ability status, gender identity and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

• Skills and experience to motivate students from a broad spectrum of academic, socioeconomic, cultural, language, ability or ability status, gender identity and ethnic backgrounds.

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with colleagues at all levels.

• Ability or willingness to develop a fully integrated Modern (Western) and Traditional (Indigenous) science course in collaboration with Kumeyaay Studies.

• Proficiency in or willingness to learn current technology and software relevant to Earth Science education and research, such as GIS (Geographic Information Systems), remote sensing, and data analysis tools.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficiency in additional languages to support diverse student populations and community outreach efforts.

• Experience in developing courses that incorporate indigenous scientific perspectives and methodologies, as well as adapting curriculum to reflect the diversity of Cuyamaca’s student population.

• Ability to design and implement hands-on learning experiences in Earth Science, using the Kumeyaay village, the nature preserve, classroom aquariums and terrariums, and the rich natural environment of San Diego County.

• Ability to foster long-term relationships and trust with Native communities for educational program development.

 

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under administrative leadership, it is the responsibility of the regular/contract college instructor to participate in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of educational programs, courses, and other experiences that will directly result in the educational growth of the students and support advancement of the visions, missions, and values of the colleges and District. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: APPLICANTS MUST MEET ONE OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA

Master’s in geology, geophysics, earth sciences, meteorology, oceanography or paleontology.

OR

Bachelors in geology AND Master’s in geography, physics, or geochemistry

OR
