Job Description

CUSTODIAN, Custodial Services, to clean assigned areas of the Institute, which may include but not be limited to: classrooms, laboratories, research facilities, conference rooms, lounges, bathrooms, hallways, stairwells, entryways, elevators, private offices, auditoriums and gymnasiums; secure areas as required, such as entrance and office doors, empty trash and recycling receptacles located inside buildings and places trash and recycling in bins and dumpster; clean and disinfect restrooms including toilets, urinals, sinks and fixtures; restock paper products and soap and removes used products; clean furniture, including polishing if required; cleans chalk boards using applicators and squeegees and clean chalk trays and erasers; clean event spaces before and after; dry mop, wet mop and vacuum floor; dust and spot clean walls and doors in high and low areas; clean and disinfect drinking fountains; clean interior windows and interior/exterior doorway windows; clean mirrors and other glass surfaces; and occasionally clean up water and debris due to leaks and floods with wet pick-up vacuums.

Job Requirements:

PREFERRED: High School Diploma or four years of experience; and an additional two years of relevant experience. Job #24732

Work Conditions: Ability to lift 50 lbs. and push and pull tilt trucks that hold up to 100 lbs.; move throughout the workplace to clean under, over and around furniture for a majority of the shift; ascend/descend stairs; and can perform custodial tasks. Personal Protective Equipment must be worn as required by the specific assignment.

Any custodian assigned to the day shift or the irregular shift, which includes weekends and holidays, must have a valid driver's license. (Custodians who were already assigned to these shifts prior to January 1, 2016 are exempt from this requirement.) Custodians assigned to other shifts are not required to have a valid driver’s license. However, custodians who possess a valid driver’s license may be asked to drive on a voluntary basis.

Employees who are assigned to an irregular shift are considered essential personnel in accordance with the MIT Policy on Emergency Closing or Early Release. During emergencies, these employees are excused from their regularly scheduled work only with the specific authorization of their supervisor, regardless of any public announcement that the Institute is closed. Other employees, who work a regular established work scheduled, are not considered essential personnel.

MIT will conduct a background check (including checking criminal records) for finalists. For current MIT SEIU members, this background check will be done for finalists who are bidding for a promotion or for a voluntary transfer to another classification or seniority unit.
