The Academy Commander is responsible for leadership, vision, and guidance in the administration of the Clark State College’s Academies approved by the Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA). This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring student training, safety, and academy compliance with provisions of the OPOTA and any other appropriate regulatory agency. Responsibilities extend to the effective operation of day and evening academies.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1.
Provides overall leadership and serves as primary administrator for all Clark State Academies
approved by OPOTA

Serves as Commander of record with OPOTA. Responsible for all audit paperwork including opening and closing audits and all records required by OPOTA. Interacts with and keeps OPOTA Field Agent informed of all activities as appropriate.

Ensures that Clark State’s officer training program meets curriculum content and hours required

Recruits, hires, orients, and supervises instructors. Ensures quality instruction and a positive,

Works with academic dean to create and oversee budget for fiscal year.

Works effectively with campus facilities and other internal departments and external

Provides student advising and mentoring on a pre-admission basis as well as during the

Promotes, develops, and conducts continuing education opportunities for Police Departments in

Ensures proper accountability/storage of all Academy weapons and ammunition.

Ensures Assistant Commander manages students employed as Security Cadets at the College.

Provides oversight for the regional Advanced Regional Trainings.

All other duties assigned by supervisor.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assistant Commander and instructors
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field with Master’s Degree preferred
- Seven (7) years’ experience as a full-time law enforcement officer
- Two (2) years’ experience as a full-time law enforcement supervisor
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of the criminal justice system in Ohio
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of requirements for an Ohio Basic Peace Officer Training program
- Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders and agencies
- Strong mentoring, interpersonal and listening skills
- Ability to exercise initiative and independent judgment in performance of assigned duties
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- OPOTA Unit Instructor
- OPOTA Commander
- Valid Ohio Driver’s License
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals, Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, faculty, and students.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment includes occasional exposure to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
