Basic Function

Under the direction of an administrator or manager performs a variety of delivery, general maintenance and custodial duties.

Representative Duties

1. Picks up and delivers various materials including District mail, furniture, and supplies; prepares orders for delivery; load and unload vehicle. E

2. Moves and sets up furniture and equipment as required for special events and activities. E

3. Maintains security of assigned areas; locks and unlocks doors as required. E

4. Performs custodial duties as assigned; cleans floors; replenishes supplies as necessary. E

5. Maintains routine records, such as records of work orders, timesheets and schedules as required. E

6. Operates a variety of equipment and machinery including drills, saws and various hand and power tools; operates a motor vehicle as necessary to conduct work. E

7. Performs general maintenance duties as assigned; installs chalk boards, bulletin boards, room partitions, dispensers and other furniture and equipment; replaces light bulbs; performs minor repair of furniture and other facilities as required. E

8. Performs a variety of clerical duties in support of the department’s day-to-day activities including but not limited to greets and directs visitors, answers calls, responds to, and directs callers, as appropriate; may make photocopies of documents and requests; ensures maintenance and repairs of equipment, as needed; contacts departments for additional service and/or maintenance needs; may perform simple repairs or maintenance of equipment related to the area of assignment. E

9. Performs related duties that support the overall objective.

Knowledge and Abilities

Knowledge of:
· District and college policies, procedures, rules, and regulations related to the area of assignment.
· California Education Code and Title V as it relates to the area of assignment.
· Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
· Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).
· Principles, methods, materials, tools, and equipment used related to the area of assignment.
· Safe work methods and safety regulations related to the area of assignment.
· Methods, equipment, and materials used in general maintenance and custodial work.
· Computer software programs, applications, databases, and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems; computer hardware and peripheral equipment related to the area of the assignment.
· Basic record-keeping, filing, file sharing, and filing system methods and techniques.
· Appropriate health and safety procedures.
· Requirements of maintaining buildings in a safe, clean, and orderly condition.
· Proper methods of storing equipment, materials, and supplies.
· Effective communication skills, both verbally and written.
· Effective communication techniques and interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
· Basic English to follow written and verbal instructions.
· Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).

Ability to:

Education and Experience

·High school graduate or General Educational Development (GED); AND
·One (1) year of custodial or general maintenance; OR
·Sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above;
·Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required qualifications for the position

Foreign Degrees

Any degree from a country other than the United States, including Canada and Great Britain, must be evaluated by an Evaluation Service prior to the closing date. Certification must be attached with copies of transcripts.

License Certificates/Credentials

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid driver license.
  • May be required to travel for various off-site meetings, trainings, conferences, and or events in support of the overall objective of the position.

Desired Qualifications

Two (2) years of related experience related to custodial or general maintenance responsibilities.

Distinguishable Characteristics

The Utility Worker performs assigned routine utility services duties including delivery, maintenance, and custodial duties.

The Utility Worker is distinguished from the Senior Utility Worker in that the latter is the senior, lead classification within the Utility Worker series. The incumbent performs a variety of difficult utility services with a high degree of efficiency and quality. The Senior Utility Worker performs lead responsibilities and provides work guidance to staff related to the area of assignment. The incumbent performs assigned duties under general supervision within well defined guidelines, policies, and procedures.

Working Conditions

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, employees are regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time; talk or hear, in person and by telephone; use hands repetitively to finger, handle, feel, operate personal computers and other standard office equipment; and reach with hands and arms.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, use of both eyes, ability to distinguish basic shades and colors and the ability to adjust focus.
Employees are frequently required to walk and stand and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds; subject to heavy lifting.

MENTAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this class, incumbents are regularly required to use written
and oral communication skills; read and interpret data; use math and mathematical reasoning; analyze and solve problems; learn and apply new information and skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks; and interact with District, students, vendors and others encountered in the course of work, some of whom are dissatisfied or abusive.

Employees work in an indoor and outdoor environment; subject to heavy lifting and fumes from chemicals.
