Montgomery College, Germantown Campus, has an immediate need for a full-time Instructional Associate in the Writing, Reading, and Language Center. The work schedule Monday-Thursday, 10:30 am – 7:00 pm and Friday 9:00 am – 5:30 pm. This is a bargaining, non-exempt, grade 25 position. Under supervision and/or direction, provide instructional support services to students and/or faculty in support of the College's academic programs and commitment to community engagement. Work with students, in-person and virtually, to tutor and demonstrate writing and reading concepts and guide the students to reinforce faculty teaching. Incumbents may help students with coursework, assignments, and associated study/learning activities such as creating instructional support materials, and developing and delivering workshops and orientations. Collaborate with faculty in multiple disciplines to foster efficient student engagement, retention, and completion. Although tasks and activities are typically determined by a supervisor, incumbents may receive direction from department faculty. Incumbents follow specific guidelines developed by supervisors and/or faculty in providing service to students.
Primary contacts include college students, staff, and faculty.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Provide direction to students by reviewing assignments, guides, lesson plans, texts and learning resources, explaining and discussing subjects and learning materials and advising students on learning/study techniques.
- May develop and conduct student orientations and subject matter workshops.
- Assists students in utilizing learning software and other resource materials; explain and demonstrate use of such materials, select and/or recommend such materials depending on student need, answers student questions regarding the use of such materials, and may correct software problems.
- Tutor students referred for individual assistance in writing and reading across the discipline; work with faculty lesson plans and other learning resources to repeat, supplement and strengthen understanding. Tutoring may occur in-person or virtually.
- Provide software and hardware support, training and instruction to staff, faculty and student assistants.
- May prepare and conduct workshops for faculty (individually and with faculty associates and other faculty presenters) and students, and assist with planning, organizing, advertising and record keeping of workshops.
- Create marketing materials such as flyers, posters, e-mail announcements, brochures, and Inside MC Online articles.
- Compile, create, and update educational materials to contribute to the resource collection and ensure consistency of service.
- Engage with current strategies in learning center pedagogy, such as through attending conferences, engaging in professional development and conducting research.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in English, Composition/Rhetoric, Linguistics, TESOL, Reading, or other closely related or writing-intensive field, such as psychology or law
- Three years of related experience.
- The equivalent combination of education, training, certification and/or experience that provides the required knowledge and expertise to perform the essential functions of the job may be considered.
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of reading, writing, tutoring, language learning theory and/or adult learning theory.
- Eligible applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States and not require employer visa sponsorship
Hiring Range: $27.68 per hour - $35.98 per hour. Initial salary placement for new hires falls between the minimum and midpoint of the range and is based on relevant candidate experience and internal equity. The maximum salary for this position is $44.27 per hour.
