Job Description

Position Summary

Located 45 minutes from the Nation’s Capital, nestled in a history-rich community of southern Maryland, The College of Southern Maryland (CSM) has been twice named in the top 150 community colleges by the Aspen Institute with academic programs in over 100 disciplines. The hiring salary for this position will be from the min to mid-point of the salary range.

The Archivist leads the Southern Maryland Studies Center (SMSC); an archive center that documents the history and culture of the Southern Maryland region. The Archivist serves both internal and external customers, coordinates archival collection development, appraisals, arrangement, descriptions, and preservation initiatives. The individual in this position provides research assistance and presentations as a liaison between the SMSC and the local community to raise awareness of the items in the archive. The Archivist establishes relationships with local historical organizations to develop collections and exhibits of interest. Additionally, the Archivist may provide other outreach activities to serve the goals of local historical preservation. The Archivist supervisors the Archives Assistant, as well as student assistants and volunteers.

Reports to: Director II, Library

The College of Southern Maryland conducts background checks in order to ensure the safety and well-being of the College's staff and students.  The final candidate for this position will be subject to the following background checks:  Criminal History Check and Sex Offender Registry Check.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Collections Management and Collections Development (40%)

• Apply current professional archival principles, standards, concepts, techniques, and methodology to appraising, arranging, and describing significant, large, complex archival collections documenting the history of the Southern Maryland region.
• Process newer and legacy collections such as manuscripts, photographs, audio-visual, book, and digital materials.
• Author finding aids to meet current standards using the archives management system.
• Develop new documentation policies and procedures to preserve the collection.
• Maintain paper-based and digital collections in accordance with current CSM Board of Trustees policies on donations.
College of Southern Maryland
• Work closely with other library team members.
• Plan and direct preservation work.

Daily Operations (20%)

• Manage the daily schedule of the SMSC.
• Define and supervise the work of an Archives Assistant, and a team of volunteers following specific policies and unit goals.
• Contribute ideas to the Library Director to aid in strategic planning.
• Identify grant funding opportunities.
• Purse professional development by attending webinars, in-person conferences that may contribute new ideas for the preservation of the collections.

Reference and Instruction (20%)

• Provide research assistance to students, faculty, staff, and independent community researchers.
• Respond to complex research requests.
• Lead instructional and informational sessions for community groups.
• Serve as a reference librarian when needed by the Library Team.

Outreach and Community Relations (20%)

• Provide the local community with knowledge of the collections by providing informational sessions on a regular basis.
• Establish relationships with community groups to reinforce CSM’s commitment to the preservation of local history.
• Develop exhibits and programming related to Southern Maryland historical events, people, places.
• Oversee digitization efforts of selected materials.

Additional Duties:
• Performs other related work as required.

Minimum Education and Training

• Master’s degree from an ALA accredited library/information sciences program with a concentration in archives.
• Two years of full-time or equivalent experience in archival or special collections.
• Experience with or knowledge of metadata standards (DACS, EAD, LCSH).

Preferred Education and Experience:
• Reference and Instructional experience desirable.
