The Santa Fe College Police Department (SFPD) is an award-winning fully sworn police agency dedicated to serving in partnership with the college and surrounding communities. SFPD is responsible for patrolling SF’s campuses, as well as SF’s six (6) Educational Centers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 day a year.

The SFPD is seeking a qualified Police Sergeant to preserve the peace, provide general police services and enforce municipal, county, state, and federal laws, as well as the rules and regulations of Santa Fe College. The Police Sergeant is responsible for the supervision of sworn law enforcement officers, as well as non-sworn staff assigned to a particular shift. Additionally, the Police Sergeant performs a full range of field and administrative work related to college patrol, traffic enforcement, crime prevention, investigation, training and outreach.

The Police Sergeant is required to work in all weather conditions, extended shifts and expected to be available for call back duty as required. This position encounters emergencies, as well as dangerous, potentially hazardous situations and materials, therefore the Police Sergeant must be proficient in the high liability skills as defined by the FDLE Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC). The Police Sergeant performs the full range of field and office work associated with the patrol, traffic enforcement, crime prevention, investigations, and training.

Job Description

Responsibilities and Duties Include:

  • Supervises Santa Fe College police officers and non-sworn staff on assigned shift.

  • Maintains, manages and schedules the rotation of police officers including the review and approval of timesheets for payroll purposes.

  • Patrols all campuses, buildings, educational centers and other SF facilities to perform security checks and to safeguard and assist students, faculty, staff and other visitors as necessary.

  • Reviews police related documentation such as crash and incident reports, as well as daily logs for accuracy and compliance with criminal, motor vehicle, traffic laws, and college regulations.

  • Supervises parking, monitor parking lots, and performs traffic enforcement.

  • Conducts crash and criminal investigations, including the preparation of detailed reports, documenting of evidence, and other tasks associate with successful investigations.

  • Responds to emergency situations, such as fire alarm concerns and elevator outages in an appropriate and timely manner coordinating with other departments and agencies as needed.

  • Serves as training officer for patrol officers.

  • Manages the maintenance of patrol vehicles.

  • Provides safety escorts for faculty, staff, and students when requested.

  • Promotes a safe and secure College environment through crime prevention and safety education programs using best practices and techniques.

  • Fosters positive working relationships with SF departments, outside agencies, and the public.

  • Participates in prosecutions and assists in the preparation of cases, including testifying in court as needed.

  • Complies with all published College Rules, procedures, guidelines, and laws/regulations governing public employees, including but not limited to those related to document retention and destruction, FERPA, and confidentiality.

  • Strictly honors the privacy and security of student records and other sensitive information according to appropriate state, federal and college regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Provides service excellence through courteous, informed, accessible and professional engagement.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Reports to: Police Lieutenant

QUALIFICATIONS

Required: A high school diploma or equivalent with three (3) years of full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer. Must have a working knowledge of Florida State statutes and local ordinances, crime prevention and/or community policing concepts, as well as the ability to successfully learn and apply college rules and regulations. Must be able to remain calm and react swiftly during stressful, volatile, and emergency situations. Must receive dispatch certification within six (6) months of employment if not already certified.

Additional Requirements: Successfully pass the background investigation, physical examination, drug testing, and polygraph. Must have a valid Florida Driver’s license and be authorized to drive for the College. Completion of a state certified Police Academy and passing score on the State Law Enforcement exam. Completion of FDLE certification, Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training certification, or other relevant training. Must maintain mobility, physical strength, and stamina to ensure the ability to see, hear, stand, bend, lift, carry, walk, or run is upheld.
Preferred: An associate's degree in Criminal Justice or a related field, full-time experience as a sworn law enforcement officer at Santa Fe College, and prior supervisory experience.
