Mountain Gateway Community College (MGCC) is a two-year public institution of higher education and one of 23 community colleges in Virginia. The college is supported by the Commonwealth of Virginia; the counties of Alleghany, Bath, Botetourt (northern portion) and Rockbridge; the cities of Buena Vista, Covington, and Lexington; and the town of Clifton Forge. MGCC provides opportunities for the extension of knowledge, skills and personal enrichment in an environment that maintains high academic standards and respect for each individual. Mountain Gateway Community College is hiring a full-time (nine-month) faculty to serve as a teaching faculty member for the Associate Degree in Nursing Program located on the Main campus.

Responsibilities and Duties include:
  • Provide classroom instruction as assigned for courses;
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the philosophy and objectives of the nursing education program;
  • Design, implement, teach, evaluate, and revise the curriculum along with the Nursing Program Head;
  • Conduct student conferences pertaining to classes as needed;
  • Submit student grades and other information required for the Student Information System per established deadlines;
  • Serve on standing committees as needed;
  • Maintain course outlines and curriculum for all courses;
  • Support the growth of the College through both formal and informal student recruitment and retention activities;
  • Enforce student compliance with written policies governing nursing practice in the hospital and all other clinical facilities;
  • Participating in evaluating new equipment, teaching materials, and teaching strategies that can be used to improve the learning potential of the MGCC students and/or participants.

Clinical Faculty Duties include:
  • Confer with the Program Head regarding the clinical rotation plan, assigned clinical agencies, and assigned group of students;
  • Attend an orientation session at each clinical facility with the group of assigned students;
  • Select patient assignments and learning experiences according to classroom instruction and the student’s needs and give them to the student the day prior to the clinical experience;
  • Review the clinical objectives with the student;
  • Conduct pre and post-clinical conferences;
  • Assist students in the integration and reinforcement of learning by relating knowledge and skills of nursing to the learning experiences of the clinical setting;
  • Provide supervision and guidance for the student using components of the nursing process with the assigned patient;
  • Review, correct, and comment on care plans and other written assignments required for clinical experience and return to the student by the following week;
  • Evaluate and record student progress and confer at the end of each rotation in terms of strengths and areas where improvement is needed;
  • Establish and maintain a cooperative relationship with staff and personnel of clinical agencies;
  • Report to Program Head any student problems/concerns that may occur in the clinical setting;
  • Maintain a record of student absences from clinical and report to the Coordinator;
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.


KSA's/Required Qualifications
Minimum requirement: Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution or BSN with extensive nursing experience with a written plan demonstrating ongoing progression in obtaining a Master’s Degree in Nursing, a Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited institution or a BSN with extensive nursing experience and occupational experience as a Registered Nurse in a health care setting. Hold an unencumbered license as a registered nurse or a multi-state licensure privilege to practice nursing in Virginia.

Effective oral and written communication and Excellent computer skills.
Knowledge of current nursing education issues and trends.
Ability to use computer and classroom technology.

Additional Considerations
Classroom teaching experience at the Registered Nurse level; supervision of students in clinical training. Experience inspiring and facilitating learning with diverse student populations

RETIREMENT PROGRAMS
Faculty members can choose between two retirement plan options: a defined contribution plan or defined benefit plan. The Optional Retirement Plan is a defined contribution plan where vesting is immediate for the employee. This plan is portable, meaning the employee can withdraw or roll over all funds into another qualifying account. The other option available is a defined benefit plan, also known as a pension plan, through the Virginia Retirement System (VRS). The vesting period for this plan is five years. Both plans have a mandatory 5% pre-tax contribution of employee’s salary
per pay period.

LIFE INSURANCE Group Life Insurance Plans Upon employment, full-time Classified employees, Teaching Faculty, and Faculty Administrative Professionals are automatically enrolled in a group life insurance policy at no cost to the employee. This plan provides natural death, accidental death, and dismemberment coverage. Coverage is the equivalent of two times the employee’s annual salary for natural death and four times the employee’s annual salary for accidental death. Optional Life Insurance Plans State employees are eligible to apply for optional life insurance coverage to enroll themselves, spouse, and/or eligible children. The employee pays the premiums.

DISABILITY
Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP):
Teaching faculty who choose to participate in the VRS defined benefit plan are covered by the VA Sickness and Disability Program which provides eight (8) days of sick days annually, personal/family leave, short-term disability, long-term disability and long-term care insurance with 100% of the premiums paid by the state. The leave year runs January 10 – January 9. To be eligible for short-term disability benefits, employees must satisfy a one-year waiting period. Once eligible, the program provides income replacement for up to 125 workdays. The level of income replacement is based on years of state service. Long-term disability eligibility needs to be approved after the
conclusion of short-term disability coverage. The standard income replacement level is 60% but could go up to 80% for catastrophic conditions. Long-term care is a benefit provided to you when you cannot perform at least 2 everyday activities of daily living. Additional information is provided at hire.

Long-Term Disability for Optional Retirement Plan Participants (ORP):
Teaching faculty members who choose to participate in the defined contribution ORP plan can purchase Long-Term Disability from the VCCS Group plan provided through UNUM. Additional information is provided at time of hire.

TUITION ASSISTANCE Education Benefit Program MGCC encourages its employees to take the initiative in promoting their professional and scholarly growth. The Education Benefits Program is a discretionary fringe benefit provided by the college. Eligible employees will receive a tuition waiver for up to six (6) credit hours per semester excluding summer.

LEAVE PROGRAMS
Sick Leave for Optional Retirement Plan Participants (ORP):
Teaching faculty members who enroll in the ORP participate in the traditional sick leave plan and accrue at the rate of four and one-half ( 4 ½ ) days per academic semester, awarded on the first day of each semester.

Leave:
Teaching faculty do not receive annual leave. However, teaching faculty not participating in VSDP receive 3 (three) days of personal leave at the beginning of the academic year.

Family and Medical Leave Policy (FMLA), Policy 4.20 Eligible employees are provided job protection for up to 12 weeks per leave year for FMLA – certified events. Employees may take an unpaid absence (leave without pay), charge their leave balances to be paid for the absence, or use a combination of both unpaid and paid leave for this period of time. Qualifying events may include the birth of a child; the adoption or foster care of a child; care taking of a family member (child, spouse, or parent) with a serious health condition; an employee’s own serious health condition that makes him or her unable to do his or her job; and qualifying exigency situations related to military service/members. Up to 26 weeks of unpaid leave may be provided to care for a covered service member with a serious injury or illness if the employee is the spouse, son, daughter, parent, or next of kin of the service member.
