Job Description

GRCC is seeking faculty who possess an interest in working with diverse student populations from a wide range of ages, ethnicities, national origins, and abilities; engage in and develop innovative teaching strategies; effectively assess student learning outcomes; demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development; and provide service to our students, the college, and our community at large. NOTE: This role will teach courses (didactic and clinical experiences) with an emphasis on psychiatric nursing.

Faculty members are responsible to GRCC and to each other for the successful completion of departmental work as well as work associated with the School of Health Sciences and GRCC as a whole. In addition to the major position responsibilities, it is expected that faculty demonstrate outstanding communication skills, collaborate effectively, use personal initiative to overcome obstacles, and work efficiently to meet deadlines. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Teach Practical and Associate Degree nursing courses comprised of both didactic and clinical/lab instruction in a variety of settings, that may include but are not limited to acute psychiatric settings.
  • Teach courses that encompass a variety of patient populations, and a range of nursing care including, but not limited to concepts surrounding mental health and wellbeing.
  • Maintain current standards of clinical practice and effectively prepare and orient to assigned clinical settings.
  • Work with colleagues to ensure consistent, evidence-based standards and instructional practices within each course.
  • Lead, advise, and support adjunct faculty to ensure consistent standards and instructional practices within each course.
  • Effectively assess, document, and advise students regarding their academic and clinical performance.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the department and GRCC through active participation on departmental and college-wide committees and projects.
  • Incorporate technologies and instructional methods for enhanced teaching and learning to diverse groups of students
  • Engage in on-going professional development to maintain expertise in the field and communicate outcomes with faculty and administration.
  • Maintain professional licensure.
  • Advise students on curriculum, academic programs, and employment/career goals.
  • Participate in departmental student academic advising plans.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of students from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of abilities.
  • Contribute to the growth and development of the Program and the College by participating in academic program review; curriculum development, evaluation and revision; committee membership; department and advisory committee meetings.
  • Analyze program, course, and student outcome data.
  • Communicate clearly with students, staff, faculty, and administration.
  • Assist the Nursing Program Director in the preparation of reports and other required documents.
  • Contribute to program accreditation processes and reports as determined by the Nursing Program Director.
  • Assist in marketing and promoting of departmental and college programs and events.
  • Promote the department by creating/supporting partnerships with state and local communities, health care facilities, and schools.
  • Adhere to college processes, policies, and contractual obligations.
  • Support the College’s Strategic Plan through departmental and college action projects as appropriate.
  • Support the department and the college through other work normally expected of GRCC faculty members.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Educational Credentials

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing required.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing required within one year of hire with proof of current progress in master’s program.
  • Current, unencumbered Michigan RN license required.

Work Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years (4000 hours) direct clinical nursing experience in psychiatry/mental health required.
  • Recent experience within the last 3 years in nursing practice or nursing education required.
  • Experience in nursing education, curriculum design, and/or utilization of education technology is highly preferred.
  • Community College teaching experience or experience teaching adult learners, highly preferred.

  • Ability to work as part of a team, including engaging in a team-teaching approach

Physical Demands

  • Physical Strength – transferring patients to or from wheelchairs, floors, mats, toilets, cars, beds, bathtubs, and showers. Other transfers may be required, including lifting up to 30 pounds.
  • Mobility – stand, lift, reach, bend, stretch, provide support and stability. Sufficient independent mobility within the architectural environment is necessary, including the ability to maneuver in restricted spaces.
  • Move quickly in an emergency.
  • Hearing – hear faint sounds from a distance of 4 feet—approximately the distance between a patient seated in a wheelchair and a person in a standing position next to the wheelchair. Hear sounds such as those emitted by patient monitors, and vital assessments, and using a stethoscope.
  • Visual Discrimination – Sufficient vision to differentiate movements, read markings on instruments, and measuring devices, and read newspaper small print.
  • Coordination – Sufficient motor skills, eye-hand coordination skills, manipulative skills, and sensory function in one upper extremity may be needed to assist and demonstrate nursing interventions. Many other therapeutic activities require dexterity, manipulation, strength, and body flexibility to perform.
  • Manual Dexterity – Sufficient fine motor skills to manipulative objects and people safely.

Mental Demands

  • Ability to work under pressure while possessing mature judgment and flexibility in regards to interruptions and schedule changes.
  • Ability to handle sensitive or difficult situations in a professional, confidential manner.
  • Ability to cope effectively with the demands associated with working with students in fast-paced healthcare settings and within the organization.
  • Must be punctual and dependable.
  • An understanding of and appreciation for the community college philosophy and student population.
  • An interest in working with diverse student populations, who represent a wide range of age, ethnicity, national origin, and ability.

Working Conditions

  • Teaching assignments vary and may encompass pediatrics to older adult population in acute, psychiatric, community, subacute, and long-term care settings.
  • Must be able to meet clinical facility requirements such as current immunizations, BLS and annual TB screening.
  • Must be able to travel to off campus clinical settings.
  • Must be able to work in a classroom and laboratory in an academic setting well as external clinical sites.
  • Ability to work in high traffic, in-door environments.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours.
