Position Summary
The College is looking for an Assistant Director for the Hudson Scholars program, within the College’s Office of Advisement, focusing on ongoing development and operations of the program. This nationally recognized and award-winning program relies heavily on strategic implementation of best practice strategies to ensure its ability to serve a growing population of students at the College.
The Assistant Director will hold responsibilities including but not limited to: supervising academic counselors, reporting and providing office representation where needed, and managing a student caseload. The Assistant Director(s) promote student success in support of and in accordance with the College’s mission statement, program policies and procedures, and established goals and objectives of Student Affairs and Enrollment.
Summary of Duties
What you would be doing in this role:
- Program Operations and Development
- Stay informed about trends, research, and best practices related to student support services in higher education, and apply this knowledge to enhance the Hudson Scholars program
- Design programming based on data, stakeholder feedback and research-based best practices.
- Develop and document programmatic practices, including but not limited to financial disbursement, faculty engagement and student support efforts
- Manage outreach around program-wide processes such as faculty progress reports, student communication campaigns and other campus-wide communications
- Academic Counseling
- Provide students with academic advising, major exploration, transfer opportunities, educational programming, and course registration assistance through monthly meetings and consistent communication.
- Assist incoming students with transition to the College by engaging in conversations about time management, study skills and test taking strategies.
- Maintain documentation, data, and reports across various platforms to inform college personnel of student success and retention rates.
- Integrate data-informed decision-making and evidence-based practices into daily work.
- Create and manage progress reports from faculty by informing students of their academic progress and providing recommendations to improve.
- Provide resources, referrals, and information to assist students in navigating the college.
- Participate in college committees and events to increase visibility for the program, gain knowledge, and build partnerships across the College.
- Office Leadership
- Provide administrative supervision to academic counselors and/or other staff (e.g., part-time advisors, student workers and/or student services assistants)
- Contribute to office and area-wide reporting
- Represent the Office of Advisement and/or Hudson Scholars program internally and externally, as needed.
- Provide oversight to office workgroup(s) and report out on progress and goal attainment
- Provide regular updates to the Director of Advisement and team regarding established goals and key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Perform other duties, as assigned.
What you’ll need to succeed:
- Initiative: A large part of this role is identifying opportunities to improve current practice. An ability to not only see the possibilities, but a clear pathway to bring them to fruition is essential.
- Clear Communication Style: Superior verbal and written communication skills are required. This role will be collaborating across HCCC offices, so professional communication is a necessity.
- Master’s degree: Required in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs, or a related field.
- Experience: Two to four years of post-master’s experience in academic counseling, advising and/or direct, relational support of undergraduate students.
- Technology Skills: Proficient in various computer software programs and SaaS including Microsoft Office suite, Airtable, EAB Navigate, Ellucian Colleague, and similar higher education platforms.
- Relational skills: Relationship building is a central part of the role, so strong interpersonal and active listening skills are essential. It is important that you balance having a supportive ear with the ability to identify needs, so students and staff are able to realize their personal and educational goals.
- Creativity: A penchant for out of the box thinking and creative problem-solving will be an asset in this role.
- Additional Skills: Collaboration, flexibility, innovation, strategic thinking, and a positive attitude.
Qualifications
What will make you stand out as a candidate:
- Prior project management experience: You’ve had experience leading projects to completion, especially across a broad, distributed team. Formal leadership titles aren’t imperative, but clear examples of how you’ve taken leadership to achieve goals are beneficial.
- Bi-lingual preferred: Our College has a linguistically diverse student population, so while not required, Spanish and Arabic language skills are a priority.
Salary Grade: 114

Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $58,012.96 - $98,622.03 per year
